Gift Allocation Policy

Frequently Asked Questions

When did this new policy take effect?

The policy was formally adopted on September 1, 2025. Implementation begins November 1, 2025.

What does the policy mean for my gift?

For each non-endowed gift, up to 95% may be restricted to the program, scholarship, or initiative you designate. A small portion (5%) will remain unrestricted to support for the university’s overall ability to serve students and fulfill its mission through a fund held at the UNT Foundation.

Example: A $1,000 gift to a scholarship will direct $950 to that scholarship, while $50 supports UNT’s ongoing efforts to expand access, improve programs, and sustain advancement activities. Your receipt will reflect the full $1,000 gift amount.

How will the 5% allocation be used?

This allocation provides unrestricted flexible resources for university-wide priorities such as new program development, student success initiatives, and strategic growth opportunities — ensuring UNT remains strong and responsive to future needs.

Are any gifts exempt from this policy?

Yes. This policy applies only to non-endowed gifts. The allocation will also not apply to documented gift pledges and subsequent pledge payments executed before September 1, 2025.  For additional information on exemptions and special circumstances, please reference policy 09.003 Gift Allocation

Why is this policy important?

UNT’s ability to connect donor generosity with lasting impact depends on sustainable resources. This approach allows UNT to maintain strong philanthropic infrastructure while ensuring donors’ wishes are honored and gifts are used as intended. By dedicating a small percentage as unrestricted support for university-wide advancement, UNT builds long-term capacity to expand programs, support students, and foster innovation.

Is this policy unique to UNT?

No. Many leading universities have similar policies to strengthen their fundraising programs and support institutional priorities. UNT’s approach aligns with these best practices in higher education.

Will this change how my gift is recognized?

No. Your generosity will continue to be honored in the same fashion, honoring the amount of your full gift.

Does the gift allocation affect tax deductibility of contributions?

No. Donors will receive gift receipts for the full amount of their gift.
