ALUMNA

Sarah Holick

From an early age, Sarah Holick, 2018 Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management graduate, knew she wanted to work with people.

Working in human resources allows me to meet a huge number of people and work as an intermediary between employees and upper Management. The UNT New College at Frisco offers a specific degree in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management that gave me the experience I needed to land internships and explore employment opportunities,” said Holick.

Determined to graduate free of debt, Holick began her college career in high school – attending local community college courses for credit, all while simultaneously working a full-time job. Holick’s high school graduation day was unlike her fellow classmates, too. She began the day by attending community college in the morning, working her job in the afternoon, walking across the stage after work, and then coming home to complete homework.

Her hard work paid off when she was able to enter UNT as a junior and accomplish her goals of graduating debt-free (in just two years), thanks to scholarship support and dedication.

“I can’t wait for the next phase in my life to begin as I start my career,” said Holick.

PH.D. CANDIDATE

Kelly Naletelich

For the second year in a row, fourth year marketing and logistics Ph.D. candidate Kelly Naletelich has earned the highly competitive UPS sponsored Ph.D. Mu Kappa Tau Scholarship. The scholarship, which acknowledges students for their academic achievements, character and contributions to both society and others, includes a cash prize and national recognition by Mu Kappa Tau and UPS.

Only one Ph.D. Mu Kappa Tau Scholarship was awarded in the nation this year, making the honor especially notable.

UNT has provided the skills, guidance, and support necessary to be successful in my career path. I have especially been lucky to be surrounded and mentored by such incredible people such as Dr. Nancy Spears, Dr. Lou Pelton and Dr. Paswan,” said Naletelich.

Naletelich plans to use her award money toward her continued research within social marketing, focusing on texting and driving, which further demonstrates her strong work ethic and dedication to positively influence the field of marketing.

Mu Kappa Tau, founded in 1966, is the only National Marketing Honor Society recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies. Recipients of the Ph.D. Mu Kappa Tau Scholarship include those who have earned academic distinction and are highly acclaimed for their accomplishments. The University of North Texas chapter of Mu Kappa Tau was chartered in 2004 by Dr. Lou Pelton and claims the most scholarship recipients of any university in the U.S. since its inception.

FEATURED DONORS

Michael & Karen Javadi

Michael and Karen Javadi established The Emily Javadi Memorial Scholarship Endowment with a $25,000 pledge through The Emily Javadi Foundation as a way to honor their late daughter, Emily, and her entrepreneurial spirit.

Emily graduated from the UNT Center for Logistics Education and Research in 2003. She worked as a supply chain analyst for Baylor Health Care System after graduating, but she was most known for her cake pops and creativity.

"How better to honor her than with entrepreneurship," said Karen. The scholarship served as an "opportunity to enrich students' lives and make a difference in education."

The Emily Javadi Foundation supports a number of other organizations that Emily was passionate about, too, and hosts a variety of events supporting the foundation’s mission to create a better world through promoting the arts, health and fitness and entrepreneurship.

This fall will mark the third Emily Javadi Foundation Benefit event. For more information about the foundation, visit www.emilyjavadifoundation.org.

UNT student takes passion to new heights

Daniel Ebonwonyi, UNT business major with a creative eye, made headlines (and Twitter feeds) when he took his passion to new heights last week. As the owner of photography business Sobapictures, Ebonwonyi decided to spend several hours one afternoon building a trampoline and sending his friend flying in order to capture the perfect shot.

And the perfect shot is exactly what Ebonwonyi got. More than 150,000 likes, and a retweet from the admired Tyra Banks later, Ebonwonyi’s business exposure, much like his model, soared.

His story was picked up by a number of media channels, including Dallas/Fort Worth’s ABC news affiliate WFAA, but while his work went viral Ebonwonyi said it meant more to him than the social media presence. “It’s about being able to make something that I really appreciate,” he said.

While Ebonwonyi may only be a sophomore, his experience thus far demonstrates that he is well beyond his years and on his way to becoming a polished businessman with a successful career in photography.

Risk Manager in Residence Grant awarded to UNT

The UNT College of Business has been awarded a Risk Manager in Residence Grant by the Spencer Educational Foundation for 2018-2019.

This grant allows the program to bring a well-known and highly respected risk manager to campus for up to three days to present to, and engage with, students and faculty regarding the risk management profession and insurance industry. The extended stay of the risk manager allows students to have a deeper and more meaningful interaction with an industry expert, which makes the experience very unique.

Mark Baker, the vice president of risk management at Hyatt Hotels Corporation, will be UNT’s Risk Manager in Residence this fall. The tentative plan is for him to visit from November 12-15. Various Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) events will be held during this “Risk Management and Insurance Week,” including the RMI Career Fair.

Adjunct Professor David Ragan honored by Investment News' 40 Under 40

As David Ragan headed for a career in photojournalism, he took a course in personal finance at the University of North Texas to help him prepare for life as an adult. "I fell in love with it," said Ragan, who promptly changed his college major.

In his senior year, while driving around town, he saw a new road sign for Grunden Financial Advisory and decided to drop in. He learned that Ricky Grunden, an early registered investment advisor (RIA), had broken away from a partnership in Dallas and opened a business in Denton. After his visit, Ragan kept calling and following up, and six months later he was offered a position.

"The process took so long because Ricky wanted to make sure it was a good fit, since it was just him and two assistants," he said. "A personality consultant interviewed each of us separately and then jointly to make sure we were all aligned."

With the addition of Ragan, who sat for the CFP exam nine months after graduation, the investment-oriented business added a financial planning component, and now provides complete wealth management services — with Ragan as a partner.

Always involved with his alma mater, Ragan was invited back eight years ago to become an adjunct lecturer in financial planning.

"I started by teaching the same introductory course that changed my career path," he said. "Now I teach the senior capstone class."

When not busy at work or teaching, the father of three enjoys extensive road trips with his family — and taking photos along the way.
