ALUMNA

Jessica Sabedra ('16)

Jessica Sabedra graduated from the College of Business in 2016 with a degree in Organizational Behavior and Human Resource Management. Working in public accounting for the past seven years, she began her career as an office manager for JonesBaggett and has continued to excel in her field ever since.

As an HR associate/generalist for Whitley Penn, Jessica was recently awarded the Fort Worth HR (SHRM chapter for the greater Fort Worth area) inaugural 2017 Emerging HR Professional of the Year award - an accolade that serves to recognize her as the next generation of HR leaders.

"HR is important to me because I like to easily connect with people," said Jessica. "Whether it’s finding and hiring new talent, or coordinating between management and employees, this profession ultimately allows me to empower employees to achieve success," said Jessica.

Just as UNT helped lay the groundwork for Jessica to thrive in her career, Jessica is now spending time ensuring those same principles she was taught are being implemented in her workplace today.

"Not only did UNT have knowledgeable instructors to help me prepare for the workforce, they also helped by inviting employers and working professionals into the classrooms to speak to students about the skills and knowledge that pertains to the curriculum."

We look forward to see where Jessica's hard work will take her next, and are proud to call her an alumna of our college.

FACULTY

Julie Willems-Espinoza

Julie Willems-Espinoza was awarded the National Defense Transportation Association Educator Distinguished Service Award for exceptional service and commitment to the goals and objectives of the NTDA. Julie serves as the associate director of the Center for Logistics Education and Research at UNT, providing students with opportunities for majoring in transportation and logistics to advance their professional and leadership skills. She has also served as an advisor to a number of student teams competing in national and international competitions.

As the associate director, Julie has implemented a speaker series and regular workshops for students to help enhance professionalism skills and broaden perspectives. In both instances, students are given the opportunity to hear from and interact with top-level executives in their field.

“The best part of my job is developing Logistics case competition teams and working with amazing and talented students. The cases they have been able to build in very short timeframes is impressive, and it’s gratifying to help them build their confidence and presentation skills. I am proud to serve as their advisor on our annual competition trips where they are recognized by industry for their professionalism.”

Her dedication to logistics and transportation has assisted in the nearly 100% placement of students upon graduation and the program's top rankings.

UNT welcomed as Chartered Financial Analyst University Affiliate

The University of North Texas successfully transitioned to the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) University Affiliation Program. This distinction signifies that the College of Business’ undergraduate finance curriculum has been mapped to the content of the CFA Level I exam and certified by the CFA Institute as addressing 70% or more of the exam content. In addition, it certifies that the college’s programming adheres to the CFA Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.

Being recognized as a CFA Affiliated University is one of the highest distinctions in the investment management profession that also comes with additional scholarship opportunities. The program awards exam scholarships to its university affiliates. Last year, UNT was eligible to receive five of these scholarships, and under the new program, beginning September of 2018, that number will now jump to 18. These scholarships include an Awareness Scholarship for women interested in earning the CFA charter.

“This affiliation has significant implications for our finance program,” said Dean Marilyn Wiley. “With a large number of CFA Charterholders among our finance faculty already, we are confident that our students will now have all the resources necessary to excel in the finance industry. Special thanks to Dr. Niranjan Tripathy, Professor of Finance and a CFA Charterholder, who completed the curriculum map that enables our recognition.”

College of Business Accounting Program earns Institute of Management Accountants endorsement

The Institute of Management Accountants (IMA), one of the largest and most respected associations focused exclusively on advancing the management accounting profession, has endorsed The University of North Texas College of Business.

This endorsement acknowledges UNT’s accounting program for having met high educational standards, enabling students to pursue and earn the Certified Management Accountant (CMA®) credential.

“The UNT College of Business Accounting Program is proud to have been endorsed by the IMA. This achievement is shared with only 32 other universities in the U.S. and is a testament to the quality of our faculty and curriculum,” said Dr. Ananth Seetharaman, UNT’s Don and Donna Millican Endowed Chair of Accounting.

To qualify for endorsement by IMA, schools must meet the following criteria: (1) the program must substantially cover the CMA exam content; (2) the program must have adequate faculty resources to deliver this content; (3) the program must be accredited by a recognized accreditation organization (e.g., AACSB, ACBSP, EQUIS, etc.); and (4) a faculty member must be designated as an IMA Campus Advocate. The program offers two tiers of endorsement: full endorsement, for those university programs that meet all endorsement criteria; and provisional endorsement, for programs with some minor to moderate shortcomings in meeting all the criteria for full endorsement.

Law created after Enron scandal has costly business impact, says UNT researcher

New research from the University of North Texas shows that the Sarbanes-Oxley Act – an act passed in the wake of the Enron and similar corporate scandals – has expensive consequences for corporate financial reporting and many businesses operating in the U.S.

Lili Sun, an associate professor of accounting at UNT, co-authored a paper detailing the effects of the act on audit fees and found that companies are paying more than ever for external audits – more than double in some instances – without actually receiving better quality audits.

“Companies weren’t budgeting for these fees,” said Sun, who co-authored the paper with Michael Ettredge of the University of Kansas and Matthew Sherwood of the University of Massachusetts Amherst. It will be published in the Journal of Accounting and Public Policy.

“It takes resources away from daily operations and, in the long run, strategic plans for other business-related expenses,” she said.
