Dr. Dan Kim

Dr. Dan Kim, ITDS professor, began teaching at UNT in the fall of 2011 and has been influencing students ever since. His teaching philosophy of helping students learn how to think, as opposed to what to think, has served as the foundation to his course work, and the students are a testament to that success.

"It is always exciting when students are able to move beyond parroting what the textbook or what I tell them, and able to draw their own conclusions from the course material."

His contributions to the college extend beyond the classroom, too. Kim's expansive list of grants and sponsored research projects date back to 2003 and continue to grow.

This year, Kim was awarded a substantial grant from the National Security Agency (NSA), which, along with the NSF-SFS grant he already holds, Kim believes that it "will help UNT’s effort to improve the Cybersecurity program and provide Cybersecurity workforce for the U.S.”

We look forward to the future collaborations and innovative research to come from Dr. Kim, and how those contributions will shape the learning experiences for his students in the College of Business.

STUDENT

Ryan Girardot

Three individuals were named UNT's 2017 Innovative Award winners. Among those included was Interim Associate Vice President for Research and Innovation Narendra Dahotre, chemistry and biochemistry Ph.D. candidate Roberto Aguilar Ayala, and College of Business marketing senior Ryan Girardot.

"It’s amazing to receive this award alongside such qualified candidates. I’m so proud of our university for recognizing innovation outside of just academia," says Girardot.

Girardot was recognized as the co-founder and CEO of Player's Revolution Sports, LLC and its app, EPLAY. EPLAY launched in June of 2017 and acquired more than 1,500 users in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in just two weeks. Serving as a platform that enables sports players to join their system and view real-time stats, scores and rankings, the business is working to revolutionize the recruiting and player experience, giving visibility and credibility to athletes.

Girardot has been a determined business owner since age 13 when he founded a league in his driveway that ultimately grew into a national competitor. "But the real world experiences I’ve had don’t cover everything... I know I will be better at my current venture thanks to the classroom education I have received here at UNT. Every lecture for me seems to have immediate real-world applications – it makes learning fun and easy," said Girardot.

UNT grows to largest enrollment, sees key gains in high-quality students

This year's State of the University highlighted several major accomplishments, including record-breaking enrollment across the board.

4,908 freshmen were welcomed to UNT this fall, with the class of 2021 being the biggest in university history at a 2.8% increase from last year. Within this new freshmen class are 26 National Merit Finalists, who will join the returning 29 National Merit Finalists for an impressive total of 55 finalists enrolled at UNT.

The College of Business is no exception to these enrollment achievements either. The college is up in Master's program enrollment by 6.2% and Ph.D. enrollment by 27%, with undergraduate credit hours also increased from last year.

It's clear that UNT continues to be the top choice for students. “With 68 degree programs in the nation’s top 100 and a welcoming campus located in one of the nation’s best college towns, UNT offers the best educational experience in Texas which is why more of the brightest students are choosing UNT,” said Vice President for Enrollment Shannon Goodman.

UNT student receives fellowship from Government Finance Officers of Texas

Lindsay Jacques, a second-year student in UNT's M.P.A. degree program and 2013 graduate from UNT's College of Business, majoring in business integrated studies, economics and human resources, has received a $5,000 Lynn F. Anderson Fellowship in Government Finance from the Government Finance Officers Association of Texas.

Established in 1933, the association, or GFOAT, is an affiliate organization of the Texas Municipal League, which represents 98 percent of Texas' urban population through its 1,100 member cities and towns. GFOAT's mission is to enhance the quality of local government finance, to assist and support local government finance professionals in Texas and to promote the public service profession.

"Being a public servant, specifically in finance, is of great interest to me. Financial officers are essential for helping to manage budgets for things that help cities operate, such as roads and trash service," she said. "This fellowship means that city finance managers see the potential in me to make my mark in the profession."

UNT's fundraising total for 2017 breaks university record

The University of North Texas Division of Advancement achieved its highest annual fundraising total ever with more than $30.1 million in commitments.

The fiscal year 2017 total includes $19.6 million in cash contributions, as well as multi-year pledges and estate gift commitments.

“Our alumni and friends made a real difference this past year in supporting UNT’s vision and making an impact on the university,” said David Wolf (Ph.D. ’04), vice president for advancement who joined UNT in May 2015. “The increase in support is the result of strategic goals set by Advancement that aim to re-engage alumni and donors with the university and focus dollars on helping students and UNT as a whole be more successful.”

Wolf’s efforts have helped to increase donor engagement and strengthen relationships in the community and support for the university. For example, UNT’s Division of Advancement produced more than 56 events to engage alumni and friends in life of the university. During this same time, the UNT Alumni Association hit an all-time high of 14,035 members.

“I’m proud of the accomplishments that David and his Advancement team have made in reconnecting and engaging alumni and friends with our UNT community,” UNT President Neal Smatresk said. “The impact our donors are making on the lives of our students is tremendous.”
