Andria Sims ('17)

There may not be always be a perfect time to pursue a dream, but as Andria Sims (’17) has proven, it is always possible.

Sims had one goal in mind after moving to Denton in 1996 – to earn her bachelor’s degree in accounting from UNT. News that she was expecting her first child that same year led to an unexpected change in those plans though, as she and her husband decided to relocate to Breckenridge, Texas to start their family.

After years of putting her dreams on hold, Sims continued to stay driven. In 2012 she was promoted to Corporate Accountant at Petroleum Exploration Company, Ltd., the company she began working for in 2009; and in 2013 she was presented with an opportunity she couldn’t ignore.

“When I had the opportunity in 2013 to go back to school, I wanted more than anything to get my degree from UNT – it was a lifelong goal,” said Sims.

Despite there being a 2 hour and 5 minute drive that stood between her and the UNT campus, Sims would not let that stand in her way. Her original intent was to earn her bachelor’s degree, but upon learning about the college’s 150-hour BS/MS accounting degree, she decided to push herself even further.

“I’m very grateful that my boss (and his boss) were so supportive and willing to let me extend my commitment to UNT so I could finish with my master’s and all of the hours I needed for the CPA exam,” said Sims.

And in May of 2017, Sims did just that. After four years of busy schedules, hard work and long drives, she was able to walk across the stage with a 4.0 GPA in both her undergraduate and master’s degree.
Sims’ now three teenage daughters may have been looking down at her from the Coliseum’s stands at commencement, but they will forever look up to her as a role model from that day forward. READ MORE...

Nick Marino Jr. ('10)

Nick Marino Jr. is making a name for himself doing good. CultureMap.com, in its September celebration of 'twentysomething trailblazers,' named him a Top Texan Under 30 for his work in marketing, social entrepreneurship and giving back.

"I love the opportunity to give back, but I'm also having fun with what I do," Marino says. "Marketing is my hobby, and UNT gave me the experience to make something out of what I love."

Since graduating, Marino has used his marketing degree to help tackle one of society's biggest challenges -- food insecurity.

As the director of social change for TangoTab, an app that works with restaurants so that diners can earn points to feed people in need through local food charities. He joined the company in 2012 as one of the first employees, and since then, TangoTab has partnered with more than 100,000 restaurants to provide meals to over 2 million people -- fulfilling its "When you eat, they eat" promise.

"Living with purpose is beyond a statement to me. It is the way I want to live my life daily," says Marino. "A lot of people are scared to follow their passion, but I say, 'Fail faster. Fail harder. But get up quicker.'"

Marino's efforts go far. He is the founder of MISSIOND, a platform that highlights people making a difference around the world. It includes a clothing line to inspire random acts of kindness. He also co-founded Revolving Mind Media, a marketing and consulting company based in Dallas.

And in 2015, Marino led the efforts to launch Feed The City events in Dallas, which have grown to eight monthly events around the country. These events bring together hundreds of people to make thousands of meals for those that are less fortunate. He also launched Farm The City events, an initiative to partner urban gardens with local food charities to provide fresh meals to people in need. READ MORE...

PPEF has been awarding scholarships to promotional products industry employees and their children since 1989 – totaling more than $1.7 million since their inception. In 2016, they expanded their support to include commitments to universities and colleges that are preparing students for careers related to their industry.

UNT will be among the first of five recipients selected for PPEF’s pilot scholarship program, and the only Texas university in the mix. Other schools include the University of Memphis, San Jose State University, Northern Essex Community College and Wake Tech Community College.

“We have seen very well-rounded UNT graduates enter the workforce and become assets to their respective organizations,” said Bille Walchek, Director of Marketing at SAGE (PPEF’s partner company). “Several members of our team at SAGE are UNT alumni and they exhibit all of the qualities you want in colleagues and representatives of your company. UNT’s logistics institute tapped to head NASCO’s North American research group

UNT researchers will soon be playing a prominent role in the future of North American logistics — the science of transporting goods in the most cost and time efficient way.

The North American Strategy for Competitiveness (NASCO) tapped UNT’s Jim McNatt Institute for Logistics Research to marshal the NASCO University Consortium and address transportation, trade, policy and infrastructure issues facing companies and government entities globally. The institute houses the Complex Logistics Systems Laboratory, which provides UNT with advanced technology – including interactive simulation software, data visualization and 3D modeling – to help manage the distribution of products, raw materials and other goods.

“UNT’s logistics expertise, the new lab and the institute are a perfect fit for what we’re trying to accomplish,” says Tiffany Melvin, NASCO president. “It takes a lot of oversight to coordinate multiple universities to seek out funding opportunities across international borders. We need more hands on deck, and UNT’s leadership gives us that.” READ MORE...

UNT finance student Ipinowula “Ipi” Adedokun is doing his part to support those in need after Hurricane Harvey. World Apparel Co., Ipi's nonprofit that aids children by using proceeds from clothing purchases, will be collecting clothing and monetary donations in hopes to fill a U-Haul, and the the hearts, of those affected by Harvey.

Ipi started World Apparel Co. as a way to give back after the Dallas shooting last year. The organization has now evolved beyond the Dallas community, with a trip to Flint, Michigan already planned for next month. Between taking classes and dropping off donations, Ipi is constantly looking for ways to make a difference.

"World Apparel Co. provides a way to look fresh and give back at the same time," says Ipi. Donations to Hurricane Harvey victims can be made by visiting his website, here: World Apparel Co.
