Brian Powers

Going up against 4,174 students, Brian Powers, UNT senior majoring in business computer information systems, took home first place in IBM's Master the Mainframe competition. The competition challenged students to come up with innovative solutions to unique challenges faced by skilled computer programmers using the mainframe.

Mainframe computers have been a vital part of our economy since the 1950s, and UNT is one of the few institutions that continues to see the value they bring to the curriculum. Globally, 92 of the top 100 banks, more than 70 percent of the biggest retailers, and 23 out of the 25 largest airlines use the IBM mainframe.

"Because of my experiences at UNT, I felt I had a good chance to win," says Powers. For beating out his competition, Powers will receive an all-expense paid trip to the SHARE conference in California.

Dr. Akhil Kumar

The UNT College of Business welcomes Dr. Akhil Kumar as Executive in Residence. Kumar received his Ph.D. in accounting from UNT and has spent the last 34 years in highly-respected leadership positions, including CEO and vice president of Caltex, as well as CFO and resident financial adviser of Chevron, to name a few.

Kumar's teaching style consists of introducing meaningful relevance to classroom content.
"I encourage my students not to focus on memorizing but to appreciate the relevance of the concepts and how these concepts would be useful in real life."

His accomplished background offers students a wealth of knowledge and experience through a worldly perspective that we're excited to bring to the College of Business.

Business philanthropist offers students the opportunity of a lifetime

wes-small

The College of Business is hosting its first annual Westheimer Business Plan Competition, sponsored by business philanthropist and UNT alumnus Jerome “Bruzzy” Westheimer. The competition gives students across campus the chance to create original business ideas – including enterprises, products and services – and to pitch those proposals to a panel of venture capitalists, consultants, entrepreneurs and executives.

“This competition provides a special opportunity for students to think critically and get in front of admired business leaders to gain constructive, personalized feedback for their proposals,” said Marilyn Wiley, dean of the College of Business.

First-, second- and third-place winners will receive $10,000, $5,000 and $1,000, respectively, per team. Remaining finalists will take home $100 per individual. READ MORE...
